(Des Moines) Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig made stops in Shelby and Pottawattamie counties on Friday as part of Ag Week and his annual visits to every county.
Secretary Naig spent the morning visiting farms in Shelby County that were impacted by severe weather last spring and part of Friday afternoon touring Flood Mitigation Levee Repair Projects on the Missouri River.
Audio PlayerNaig tells KSOM/KS95 News, since the floods of 2018 and 2019, several levee repair projects have been completed through the Flood Mitigation Fund, which is administered by the Iowa Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management.
The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship has a seat on the Flood Mitigation Board and has been involved in granting funds. The projects restore flood protection to thousands of acres of river-adjacent cropland and protect bridges and infrastructure. The levee is within DeSoto National Wildlife Refuge.
