(Council Bluffs) One person died, and two others, including a nine-year-old boy, suffered injuries in a two-vehicle crash in Council Bluffs.
The Pottawattamie County Sheriff’s Office says the accident happened on Saturday at the intersection of Wabash Avenue and Ashwood Road. The Pottawattamie County Sheriff’s Office, along with Lewis Township Fire and Rescue and Council Bluffs Fire and Rescue, responded to the scene. Responders found a 2004 Hyundai Santa Fe, driven by Renrenay Thomas from Glenwood, Iowa, had collided with a 2023 Cadillac XT5 operated by Theresa Ellsworth from Council Bluffs in the southbound lane of Wabash Avenue.
According to the preliminary investigation, the Santa Fe was heading north when it lost control and crossed the center line. The driver’s side of the Santa Fe struck the front of the XT5, causing both vehicles to come to a halt near the collision site. Renrenay Thomas was trapped inside the vehicle and had to be extricated by Lewis Township Fire. She was subsequently transported to Nebraska Medicine with life-threatening injuries and was later pronounced deceased.
Theresa Ellsworth and a 9-year-old boy were taken to Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs with non-life-threatening injuries, assisted by Council Bluffs Fire.
