(Des Moines) The age to buy and carry handguns in Iowa could be lowered.
The state House passed a proposal to lower Iowa’s minimum age for pistol or revolver purchases and carry from 21 to 18. Federal restrictions would allow purchases through private sales but prohibit purchases through federally licensed firearm dealers. The bill will head to the state Senate for consideration.
Opponents of the bill point to increased dangers when letting people ages 18 to 20 possess and carry guns. Additionally, opponents note data showing that people in specific demographics are more likely to commit certain acts of gun violence during the bill’s subcommittee hearing earlier this month.
Meanwhile, state lawmakers support a bill to increase security at Iowa schools.
If the proposal is signed into law, Iowa public, private, charter, and innovation zone schools must modify door systems and video surveillance to combat active shooters. New door locks and intrusion-resistant glass would also be mandated.
The Department of Education would help school districts cover the funds through a grant program established by the bill.
