(Boone, IA) — While the Iowa High School Athletic Association has made a big move to improve its basketball state tournament, the organization’s other big money makers football and wrestling continue to be on solid footing.
Football has a logical home at the UNI Dome in Cedar Falls but there has been a slight philosophy shift in how the IHSAA puts together its playoff pairings. For the longest time, geography was the number one factor in setting the playoff brackets but now there has been more of an effort to seed the teams based on records and the point systems. That has meant more travel for some teams in the early rounds of the football playoffs but Tom Keating, the Executive Director of the IHSAA says that has not been a problem
Brand new football schedules will be released in a couple of weeks which Keating actually says is unique to high school football across the country
As for wrestling, the attendance at this year’s state tournament did see a small decline so Keating says they are going to evaluate the schedule, format, and most everything about what to do it about it
Keating says that there is no reason to move the state wrestling tournament from the Wells Fargo Arena at all.
