(Ames) The Iowa Department of Transportation, in cooperation with the Iowa State Patrol, has closed northbound and southbound Interstate 29 from Sergeant Bluff to Missouri Valley due to low visibility, stranded vehicles, and downed powerlines across the interstate. Crews are working to close the gates as quickly as possible.
Iowa State Patrol Trooper and District #4 Public Information Officer Shelby McCreedy says KSOM/KS95 News conditions rapidly deteriorate throughout the area, including on alternative routes.
While many roads are marked, travel is not advised. The conditions make travel extremely treacherous, and you could easily find yourself in a life-threatening situation.
The Iowa DOT recommends that northbound I-29 travelers near Omaha/Council Bluffs or south of the metro area seek shelter in the cities rather than continuing north to Missouri Valley. The Omaha/Council Bluffs area offers more traveler services and truck parking.
Southbound I-29 travelers should seek shelter in Sioux City. Parking is available at:
- Expo Center, exit at Floyd Blvd
- Sams Club, exit at Singing Hills
- Riverfront, exit at Hamilton Blvd
- Long Lines Family Center, exit at Pierce Street/Nebraska Street
Travelers already within the closed section will be allowed to exit. If vehicles are stranded, emergency crews will attempt to assist travelers to safety. However, due to conditions, emergency response could be impossible or significantly delayed.
Travelers who have sought shelter in any available rest area facilities will be allowed to remain there unless directed by Iowa DOT or law enforcement personnel to relocate to another designated safe location.
The decision to close an interstate roadway means a serious safety condition exists, and rescue crews may be in the area. Persons should never attempt to enter a closed roadway or go around barricades or gates.
The Iowa DOT will notify you when the roadway is safely reopened.
