(Red Oak) Construction work on the Montgomery County Communications tower is progressing. On May 21, 2024, three confirmed tornadoes swept through Montgomery County, leaving behind a path of destruction.
Montgomery County Emergency Management Coordinator Brian Hamman says crews are making progress restoring and repairing the damage to the public infrastructure and the damaged residential properties. On the county side, most recently, the communications tower near Villisca sustained over one million dollars in damage. Hamman says the majority of the damage was to the tower itself.
Hamman says the goal is to have the radio tower 100-percent functional in three to four weeks.
Additionally, the violent storm caused significant damage to Hacklebarney Woods Park. The Park includes two campgrounds, a lake, a pond, picnic areas, a shelter, and hiking/equestrian trails. The damage was estimated at $304,000. Hamman says Conservation and independent contractors have been working to repair and replace the damage. He says the Park is scheduled to open this spring.
