(Pottawattamie Co) The Pottawattamie County Board of Supervisors discussed voluntary annexation of 473 acres of land in the southern part of the County adjacent to 192nd Street.
The City of Council Bluffs presented Pottawattamie County with an application for voluntary annexation to the City from five property owners wishing to be annexed into the City of Council Bluffs. Iowa Code allows for the City to receive up to 20-percent additional territory without the consent of the property owners to create uniform boundaries. The City wishes to annex the real estate within two miles of the City corporate limits.
One common concern the supervisors have heard is traffic, particularly near Bunge Avenue. Supervisor Jeff Jorgensen asked whether a traffic study would be conducted.
Another concern of the Supervisors is whether the City will be paving the whole roadway or if it would require the county to pave half.
Supervisor Susan Miller said the County Engineer was instrumental in providing his input for the letter that the board of Supervisors submitted to the City.
Following discussion, Supervisor Tim Wichman made a motion to move forward with the annexation.
The motion failed with a vote of three to two. Supervisors Scott Belt, Brian Shea and Jeff Jorgensen voted Nay. Susan Miller and Tim Wichman voted Aye.
The Board will have a new resolution written for their next meeting.
In other news, the Supervisors set April 1st at 10:00 a.m. as the date for a public hearing on Pottawattamie County’s Proposed Property Tax Levy for Fiscal Year Ending June 30th, 2026.
