(Des Moines) New tariffs on imported goods from Canada and Mexico are effective today. Republican Iowa US Senator Chuck Grassley says he’ll wait and see how it plays out.
Grassley says it could have an impact on pork production in Iowa.
The increased tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China went into effect after midnight, prompting immediate responses from Canada and China with retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods.
China has announced an additional 15% tariff on imports of U.S. farm products, which is scheduled to begin on March 10. This timing may allow for some negotiation before the tariff takes effect.
Canada has committed to implementing a new tariff of 17% on a range of U.S. products.
Mexico has not yet responded; however, 7.8 million metric tons (307 million bushels) of U.S. corn that have not been shipped are still pending sales. Notably, Mexico is the largest buyer of U.S. corn.
