(Manning, Iowa) Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig visited Red Barn Solutions south of Manning on Friday afternoon to learn more about the company’s innovative approach to planting cover crops. Red Barn Solutions has developed an air seeder that mounts directly onto a combine, allowing farmers to plant cover crops like rye and wheat while harvesting corn or soybeans. This technology enhances efficiency by saving time and ensuring a more convenient and timely seeding process in the fall.
Naig tells KSOM/KS95 News he first connected with Red Barn Solutions representatives in Lamoni, where he was introduced to the cover crop seeder.
He expressed his appreciation for Red Barn Solutions’ ability to handle the design, machining, and engineering of various projects.
Naig emphasized the importance of increasing cover crop adoption, noting that the short fall window for seeding presents a challenge. By integrating the seeder with the combine, farmers can streamline the process and eliminate an extra step.
He highlighted Iowa’s progress in conservation efforts but stressed the need to continue seeking solutions to support farmers. Addressing challenges such as equipment availability is a key part of advancing conservation work.
Naig’s visit to Red Barn Solutions was part of his annual 99-county tour across Iowa. With a quarter of the year completed, he remains on track in his commitment to engaging with agricultural communities throughout the state.
