(Oakland, IA) — Riverside girls basketball is trying to do something that they have never done before — go to the state tournament. The Bulldogs take on #1 ranked St. Albert tonight in a Class 1A Regional Final in Council Bluffs.
Riverside comes in with a 20-3 record and has playoff wins over Fremont Mills 58-23 and CAM 50-31. Nobody on the Bulldogs average in double figures — seven different players average between 4 and 9 points a game. Head Coach Mark Jeppesen says they make it work
The Saintes come in at 21-1 and they are led by Junior Avah Underwood who averages a double double 13.8 points and 10.5 rebounds a game. There’s also Sophomore Marua Ryan at 10.5 points a ball game but there is no flashy stats for these two teams — no dynamic 20 point scorer — Jeppesen says the two teams are almost a mirror of each other
St. Albert has been here before — they have been at least into the regional finals 5 of the last 6 years including going to state semifinals last season. This is new territory for Riverside so the Bulldogs will try to relish the role of the underdog
Game time tonight at Abe Lincoln High in Council Bluffs is 7 pm.
