(Des Moines) The National Weather Service issued an Extreme Cold Warning for much of western, central, eastern, and northeastern Iowa until noon today. Wind chills are forecast to plummet to 30-40 below zero. A Cold Weather Advisory goes into effect from 6:00 p.m. today to noon on Wednesday.
A Cold Weather Advisory means that apparent temperature values will fall between -20° and -29°F within 24 to 36 hours. Please exercise caution and wear appropriate clothing if heading outdoors for any prolonged period.
An Extreme Cold Watch means that apparent temperature values are expected to fall to -35°F or lower over northern Iowa or -30°F or lower over the rest of Iowa within two to three days. Start planning to limit any outdoor activity during this time.
An Extreme Cold Warning means that apparent temperature values are expected to fall to -35°F or lower over northern Iowa or -30°F or lower over the rest of Iowa within 24 to 48 hours. Please avoid unnecessary outdoor activities and wear protective clothing if you venture outdoors. On unprotected skin, you can get frostbite in 10-15 minutes.
