(Undated) The average price of a dozen Grade A large eggs has cracked a new record.
The consumer price index for January 2025 shows that Grade A eggs nationwide cost four dollars and 95 cents, which is 13 cents more than the prior record of four dollars and 82 cents.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the previous record was set in January 2023. The average price for a dozen eggs increased by 80 cents from December to January. Egg prices haven’t been under three bucks a dozen since June 2024, when they were two dollars and 72 cents.
The dramatic increase is linked to the spread of bird flu in the U.S., prompting a state of emergency in California this week.
According to Reuters.com, Bird flu has wiped out about 159 million chickens, turkeys, and other birds nationwide since the outbreak began in poultry in 2022. It has infected nearly 70 people in the U.S. since April and killed one person.
