(State) Department of Natural Resources Foresters are anticipating moderate to severe winter burn damage to white pines and other types of conifers this winter.
John Lorenzen, with the DNR Office in Lewis, said symptoms of winter burn include browning or bleaching of needles, loss of needles, and even tree death.
Lorenzen said if the needles die, but the buds remains alive, they will regrow foliage.
He said there is no way to prevent winter burn, but you can reduce the risks by properly mulching around your conifer trees and making sure the tree is well-hydrated before it goes dormant in the fall.
