(Des Moines) Nearly 7 million Americans, including over 62,000 Iowans, are living with Alzheimer’s disease. The Alzheimer’s Association Iowa Chapter will host a virtual community forum on January 30 at 11 a.m. to discuss the challenges rural Iowans face in Alzheimer’s care. Panelists include experts and caregivers from across the state.
In Iowa, 11% of residents aged 65 and older have Alzheimer’s, with rural counties like Ringgold (12.9%) and Monona (12.6%) showing higher prevalence rates than urban areas. Rural communities often face obstacles such as limited access to diagnosis, medical care, long-term care options, and caregiver support.
The forum aims to address these challenges, raise awareness, and explore solutions to improve access to care and reduce the burden of Alzheimer’s in rural areas. The Iowa Chapter is also offering local and virtual support groups and education programs statewide.
