(Des Moines) During last week’s Condition of the State address, Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds outlined her priorities, including addressing cell phone use in schools. District #9 State Senator Tom Shipley noted that there has been significant discussion regarding cell phones in schools. The Nodaway Republican stated that the issue is about five years overdue for attention, but he believes it is better late than never.
Shipley mentioned that several schools have already begun implementing guidelines for cell phone use. He indicated that some school officials advocate for legislators to develop a standardized policy across the state.
Senator Shipley says in line with this is hands-free driving,
While he acknowledged that there are rare occasions when parents may need to contact their children during school hours, he believes they can still do so by calling the school and leaving a message. Senator Shipley added, “We have convinced ourselves that everyone needs to be able to connect with anyone immediately. However, when we weren’t constantly connected, we were more civil, knew our neighbors, talked to each other, and were not exposed to as much negative information. Limiting cell phone use can be a starting point for returning to those values.”
