(Atlantic) Clarinda’s strong late-game performance propelled the Cardinals to a 50-33 win over Atlantic in a Hawkeye Ten Conference boys’ basketball matchup Tuesday night in Atlantic.
Sam Kline led the Cardinals with 19 points, while Warner Schmitt added 11. Gavin McLaren scored 9 points for the Trojans, with Shelton Mualia contributing 8, Grant Petty 7, Hunter Nelson 5, and Kinnick Juhl 4.
Both teams struggled to find an offensive rhythm early, with Atlantic holding an 8-7 lead after the first quarter. Clarinda, powered by 11 first-half points from Kline—including a three-pointer—went into halftime with an 18-14 advantage.
Atlantic opened the second half with an 8-0 run, taking a 22-18 lead on balanced scoring from Petty, Mualia, McLaren, and Juhl. Clarinda responded with a 7-0 run to reclaim the lead, entering the fourth quarter ahead 33-29.
In the final period, Schmitt caught fire from beyond the arc, sinking three three-pointers. Kline and Kyle Wagoner added two more, fueling a 17-4 run that sealed the game for Clarinda.
With the win, Clarinda improves to 8-4 and will travel to Shenandoah on Friday. Atlantic, now 2-9, faces a road game at Harlan the same night.
