(Avoca, IA) — Luke Sternberg did not have to look too far to find his college home — the AHSTW Senior has decided to play college football for Iowa Western Community College in Council Bluffs, one of the top junior college football programs in the country.
Sternbeg’s big goal is to play Division I FBS Football but his options were limited on that front — Army and Air Force offered him scholarships but the military commitment did not appeal to him so he turned elsewhere and in the end, going to Iowa Western made the most sense
There have been many football players that have played at Iowa Western and then transfer to a FBS school — there were 16 players from the 2023 team that moved on to play D I football. There are six former Reivers that went to play in the NFL. Playing at the next level is the goal for Sternberg
At Iowa Western, Sternberg will play on defense in the secondary and will also see some action on special teams
Iowa Western won back to back national junior college championships in 2022 and 2023 and lost to Hutchinson St. this year to spoil a three peat. Former Iowa St. Cyclone Hunter Dekkers was the team’s starting quarterback. The championship game was broadcast nationally on ESPN. Sternberg hopes for that opportunity
Sternberg will study pre-business at Iowa Western with the ultimate goal of dual majoring in business management and supply chain management at a four year college or university. In the meantime, he will finish out the basketball season for AHSTW and then run track in the spring.
