(Glenwood) Atlantic edged out Glenwood in round two of Hawkeye Ten Conference girls’ basketball action on Tuesday night. The Trojans had previously dominated the Rams 54-30 in their first meeting on December 6, but the rematch proved to be far more competitive.
Atlantic’s scoring was primarily fueled by strong performances in the paint. Paytn Harter led the Trojans with 17 points, while Katrina Williams added 15. Makenna Schroeder connected on Atlantic’s lone three-pointer, finishing with 3 points. Lila Wiederstein contributed 4 points, Peyton McLaren chipped in 2, and Zoey Kirchhoff rounded out the scoring with 1.
For Glenwood, Maggie McChesney led the way with 13 points, including three shots from beyond the arc. Maggie Smith scored 11 points, two of which came from three-point range. Haylee Hughes added 6 points, Megan Hughes had 4, and Malynn Johnson and Carley Lewellen each scored 2.
The Trojans ended the first quarter with a late surge, taking an 11-5 lead. The Rams fought back in the second quarter, outscoring Atlantic 12-5 to claim a 17-16 edge. However, Atlantic regained momentum and held a slim 21-20 lead at halftime.
Early in the third quarter, Maggie Smith hit a three-pointer to tie the game at 23-23, but Atlantic responded with a run to close the quarter ahead 31-25. Glenwood mounted a late rally in the final frame, narrowing the deficit to 40-38. However, Paytn Harter, an 84% free-throw shooter, sealed the win for the Trojans by sinking three consecutive free throws in the closing moments, securing a 43-38 victory.
Atlantic improves to 7-4 on the season and will travel to Kuemper on Friday. Glenwood, now 2-6, is set to face Shenandoah on Friday.
