(Des Moines) December 2024 is following a similar trend over the past 10 to 20 years, with warmer-than-average temperatures and less snowfall.
State Climatologist Dr. Justin Glisan says the average temperature in December across Iowa was three degrees above average, with less snowfall and more rainfall. Glisan says snowfall in December was 2.3 inches, six inches below average. Glisan recorded 1.4 inches of rainfall across the state, which is near the average.
December in southwest Iowa was drier than usual by about one-quarter to one-half inch, depending on the location in the southwest region of the state. Eastern Iowa showed wetter-than-normal conditions.
