(Atlantic) Creston took an early lead and never looked back, defeating Atlantic 51-41 in a Hawkeye Ten Conference boys’ basketball game Saturday afternoon in Atlantic.
The Panthers were led by standout performances from Jake Hoyt, who scored a game-high 21 points, and Rhett Driskell, who added 15 points. Brayden Schoon contributed eight points to round out Creston’s top scorers.
For Atlantic, Grant Petty led the charge with 15 points, while Hunter Nelson and Kinnick Juhl chipped in eight points apiece. Gavin McLaren and Reid Woodward added four points each for the Trojans.
The game started with a defensive battle in the first quarter, as Creston managed an 11-6 advantage. By halftime, the Panthers had extended their lead to 28-16, fueled by Driskell’s 11 first-half points and Hoyt’s eight-point contribution.
Atlantic mounted a spirited comeback in the second half, narrowing the deficit to 38-31 by the end of the third quarter. Nelson and Petty sparked the rally with two three-pointers each. However, the Trojans couldn’t close the gap in the final frame, as Creston held strong to secure the win.
With the victory, Creston improves to 2-4 on the season, while Atlantic drops to 2-6.
