(Des Moines) A winter storm will arrive later today and bring accumulating snowfall to southern Iowa from tonight through the day Sunday before ending Sunday evening.
The National Weather Service says the highest snowfall amounts of 6 to 8 inches will fall near the Missouri border in southwest and parts of south central Iowa. Very dry air will be moving into Iowa from north to south with winds from the northeast and north averaging 10 to 20 mph. This will cause a very sharp gradient in snowfall amounts with lower amounts in the northern part of a given county and higher amounts in the southern part of the same county. Any shift in the predicted storm track will therefore have significant impacts on forecast snowfall amounts, so continue to monitor the forecast for the latest updates. The winds will cause at least some minor blowing and drifting snow where the new snow falls.
A Winter Storm Warning is in effect from Noon today to midnight Sunday for Fremont and Page counties and from 9:00 this evening to 3:00 a.m. Monday for Taylor and Ringgold counties. Heavy mixed precipitation is expected with total snow accumulations between four and eight inches and ice accumulations around a light glaze.
A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from noon today to 6:00 p.m. Sunday for Pottawattamie, Mills and Montgomery counties, and from 9:00 this evening to 3:00 a.m. on Monday for Adams and Union counties. Mixed precipitation is expected with total snow accumulations between one and four inches and ice accumulations around a light glaze.
