(Atlantic) Shenandoah edged out Atlantic 56-53 in a Hawkeye Ten Conference girls’ basketball game on Friday night.
Freshman Kayln Scamman led the Fillies with 25 points, while 6’1″ senior post player Lynnae Green added 14 points, and Alexis Shebaum added eight. Katrina Williams was the top scorer for Atlantic with 16 points, Peyton McLaren contributed 15, and Paytn Harter finished with 10.
Atlantic Head Coach Dan Vargason was not disappointed in his team’s effort.
The game was competitive throughout. The Fillies held a narrow 14-13 lead after the first quarter and managed to erase a five-point deficit in the second quarter, going on a 9-0 run to take a 25-23 lead at halftime. Scamman and Green combined for 17 of the Fillies’ 25 points in the first half. Makenna Schroeder and Paytn Harter made three-point shots to keep Atlantic close at the half.
Katrina Williams dominated the paint in the second half, scoring ten points and helping Atlantic take a 34-33 lead after three quarters. However, Chloe Denton made two three-point shots, and Alexis Shebaum added another, while Scamman hit her second and third three-pointers to help secure the 56-53 victory for Shenandoah.
The Fillies extend its record to 7-2, and Atlantic falls to 5-4.
