(Des Moines) Falling and potentially heavy blowing snow is expected to create dangerous driving conditions in the southern two tiers of Iowa counties late Saturday into Sunday.
The Iowa Department of Transportation says normal winter driving conditions may be present throughout most of the state, however they may deteriorate very quickly for those traveling into the path of the storm south, west, and east into bordering states.
Travelers are urged to plan ahead and check road conditions along their entire route. Iowa’s 511 traveler information system provides road conditions for Iowa, as well as surrounding states by choosing the “Winter Road Conditions (Regional)” layer ” or clicking on the “Winter Driving” quick button. Regional road conditions are available on the Iowa 511 website as well as the Iowa 511 app.
When planning your trip, consider areas where traveler services are plentiful such as larger metro areas. Services such as hotels, gas stations, restaurants, and adequate truck parking can keep you safe if conditions get dangerous. Services may be limited in more rural areas where weather conditions are severe.
The DOT says you are urged to evaluate the need to travel in extreme conditions. If you must travel, be sure to reduce your speed, avoid distractions, and wear your seatbelt. You are also urged to carry a winter survival kit for use in case of an emergency. For more DOT winter preparedness resources, visit the Winter Travel Information website.
