(Area) — Time to take a look a number of alumni from East Central Iowa high schools that are playing college basketball.
Brad Curren, a Harlan grad, has started every game so far for Central College men’s basketball. In 10 games, the Dutch are 6-4 and Curren is averaging 7.1 points and 2.2 rebounds a game. He is second on the team with 26 assists and is shooting 34.6 percent from three point land (18-52) and 11 of 13 from the free throw line. The Central Sophomore had a season high 12 points on November 29 against Concordia Moorehead, a 78-66 win. He followed that up with 10 points in an 84-76 victory against Northwestern St. Paul and continue his hot streak with 11 points versus Buena Vista which was a 73-71 loss. The Dutch will play in Loras Holiday Classic in Dubuque on December 28 and 29 against North Central (Minn) and Alma (Mich).
The Central College women’s basketball team have two local alumni — Danika Arnold a Freshman from Glenwood and Miah Urban a Sophomore from East Mills. Both have seen limited minutes off the bench. Arnold has played in two games and hit a three pointer. Urban has seen action in three games and is 0-7 from the field but 2-2 from the free throw line. The Dutch women are 7-4 and will play on New Year’s Day at Millikin (IL).
There are local alumni that play up at Buena Vista. On the men’s side, AHSTW grad Kyle Sternberg has been in all of the Beavers 11 games, starting 10 of them and helping BV to a 7-4 record. The Sophomore is 4th on the team in scoring, averaging 7.9 points a game. He is shotting 38.7 percent on his three point shots (12-31) and is second on the team in rebounds, averaging 6.6 a game. Sternberg’s season high was in Buena Vista’s opener — he scored 17 points which included 3-5 from three point land in a 97-55 win. Eleven days later the former Viking had 16 points in a 102-98 loss to Marian. Max DeVries a Freshman from Red Oak is also on the BV roster but has not played this season.
On the women’s side, Alexis Flaherty from Tri Center and Carley Dennis from CAM are two freshmen that have seen limited action for Buena Vista. In three games, Flaherty has a combined 4 points and 4 rebounds. Dennis has yet to take the court for BV this season. So far Buena Vista is 5-5.
Speaking of CAM, last year’s leading scorer for the Cougars Eva Steffensen is playing hoops at Kirkwood Community College. She has come off the bench in all of the Eagles 12 games and is averaging 4.6 ppg. She is 5-8 from three point land and 6-9 from the free throw line. She had a game high 9 points twice, both games wins for Kirkwood which is a perfect 12-0 on the season.
