(Corning, IA) — The Pride of Iowa Conference will have a battle this season in boys basketball and Southwest Valley hopes they will be in the thick of it. Mount Ayr is the early favorite and off to a 3-0 conference start but the Timberwolves have won their first two conference games and the two teams face off tonight in a make up game.
Valley is led by Alex Morgan who is averaging a double double — 19.5 points and 11.8 rebounds a game. Head Coach Kyle Bashor says he is able to maneuver inside to position himself to score and rebound
If Morgan is Mr. Inside then Cael Hogan is Mr. Outside — Hogan is averaging 16 points a game is shooting 41 percent on his threes. Wyatt Mendenhall (8.2 ppg), Colton Pegg (7.5 ppg) and Walter Bissell (5.0 ppg) give the T-Wolves plenty of offense. They also know how to take care of the basketball — Southwest Valley averages just under 10 turnovers a game which for high school basketball is solid
Southwest Valley is coming off a 52-40 loss to Bedford — the Bulldogs are unbeaten so far and they used to be in the Pride of Iowa but have switched to the Corner Conference. That leaves Southwest Valley, Mount Ayr and SE Warren as the three favorites in the Pride. The Timberwolves play at the Raiders tonight and at the Warhawks tomorrow so this week will determine a lot says Bashor
After the break, Southwest Valley will host Martensdale St. Mary’s on January 3rd.
