(Harlan, IA) — Its been mixed results for the Harlan girls and boys basketball teams as they head into tonight’s doubleheader, hosting Glenwood, coverage on KSOM.
Both teams are .500 to start the season — the girls lost two straight to begin the season to Treynor and St. Albert but have rebounded to beat Shenandoah and Kuemper Catholic. Head Coach Zach Klassen says they focused on reducing their turnovers and playing tougher D
Senior Molly Swenson (15.0 ppg) and Sophomore Kenzley Bruck (14.5 ppg) are leading Harlan in scoring but Klassen is getting incredible production from Senior Aubrey Schweiso — against Shenandoah she had the following line: 12 points, 9 rebounds, 9 assists, 4 steals and 3 blocks. If they get more lines like that out of Schweiso, they’ll get more wins
They’ll face a young Rams team that has just one senior who doesn’t play much — Glenwood is led by Sophomore Maggie McChesney (11.2 ppg) and Freshman Mya Donscheski (9.0 ppg) and is 1-3 with their only win coming against Denison Schleswig.
On the boys side, the Cyclones and Rams should put on a good show — Glenwood is undefeated at 4-0 with wins over CBTJ, Atlantic, D-S and fought off Clarinda on Friday for a 62-57 win. The Rams are not big but are athletic led by Ayden Gibson’s double-double average (20.5 points and 10.5 rebounds a game). Harlan lost to a very good Kuemper team but turn things around to beat Shenandoah. Cyclones Head Coach Mitch Osborn says his team must handle the Rams defensive pressure
Harlan is led by Dallas McDowell (19.0 ppg). Ben Leinen (15.5 ppg) and Jozef Reisz (12.0 ppg) are both inside players who can score — the Cyclones are only 7-23 from three point land. Osborn says shooting the three is not the priority
