(Cass Co) The Cass County Board of Supervisors approved the third reading of an ordinance imposing a local option income surtax for emergency medical services.
Board Chair Steve Baier read the resolution, which in part states, the purpose of this ordinance is to comply with Iowa Code 422D.3, optional taxes for emergency medical services and to establish a one percent local income surtax following the November 5th General Election when 76-percent of the voters approved Public Measure A.
The Supervisors held a public hearing regarding the EMS Advisory Council’s Annual Recommendation of EMS Levy as required by Iowa Code and there were no comments.
In other news, the Oath of Office was administered to incoming County Sheriff John Westering and incumbents Kathy Somers – Auditor, Stephen Green – Supervisor District 1, Bernard Pettinger – Supervisor District 5, and Steve Baier – Supervisor District 4.
The Supervisors also discussed allocating the remaining balance left over from the ARPA funds that were designated to purchase an ambulance to be put towards training new EMTS and Paramedics, strengthening the EMS system in Cass County. The board also discussed appropriating the remaining ARPA funds in the amount of $20,291 to the libraries in Cass County. Those items will be approved by a formal resolution vote in the near future.

-Closing the Courthouse at Noon on Christmas Eve.
-The annual resolution setting posted weight limits on bridges that are embargoed
-The Cass County Safety Action Plan in support of strategies outlines in Iowa’s five-year strategic Highway Safety Plan and the overall vision of zero fatalities on Iowa’s public roadways.
-The Cass County Wellness Program for January 1, 2025 – October 31, 2025
-Class B Retail Alcohol License for Dollar General in Griswold
