(Atlantic) The Atlantic Girls’ basketball team secured their fourth straight win on Tuesday night, defeating Kuemper Catholic 65-44 at home. The Trojans jumped to an early 11-0 lead and maintained control throughout the game. Atlantic Head Coach Dan Vargason attributes the team’s strong defense to their fast start and commanding lead.
Three players scored in double figures for Atlantic. Makenna Schroeder led the way with 19 points, while Paytn Harter added 16. Katrina Williams, who averages 7.3 points per game, made an early impact by scoring 10 points in the first half, helping to ignite the Trojans’ offense.
Makenna Schroeder had a standout performance for the Trojans, hitting five three-pointers—three in the first half and two more in the second half to close out the game.
Lila Wiederstein scored eight points, and Zoey Kirchhoff added seven points to the cause for the Trojans.
The Trojans held a 14-2 lead at the end of the first quarter and extended it to a 33-17 advantage by halftime. The Knights fought back in the third quarter, scoring 16 points to Atlantic’s 17, bringing the score to 49-34. However, the Trojans surged again in the final period, outscoring Kuemper 16-10 to secure a 65-44 victory.
Elsa Tiefenthaler led Kuemper with 25 points, while Charlotte Hackfort contributed 8, and Kaylie Simons added 5. The Knights drop to 2-4 on the season and will host Spencer on Thursday before closing out their pre-holiday schedule at home against St. Albert on Saturday. Atlantic improves to 5-2 and will travel to Lewis Central on Friday.
