(Avoca, IA) — The AHSTW boys wrestling do not have great numbers right now but the Vikings have some good possibilities for a state tournament bid this year. Shane Baker and his son Michael Baker are the co-coaches — Michael is currently finishing up enrollment in the police academy and Shane is helping him out. AHSTW is led by Kayden Baxter who finished in 6th place at the state tournament last year at 157 pounds as a Junior. On Saturday, Baxter won his weight class at the Coach Riley Invitational hosted by Nodaway Valley and he is out to a 6-0 start. Shane Baker says Baxter is starting to be more aggressive
Henry Lund also went to state last year and had an epic match against Kyler Sallis of Don Bosco. Lund trailed 10-0 and came back to lead 12-11 in the third period only to give up a reversal and near fall points to lose 16-14. Baker says Lund has the ability this year to do significantly better
Junior Tucker Osbahr was a winner at Nodaway Valley Saturday so he should be one to watch at 132. Roman Scheffler is a sophomore and was third place at 215 and Baker says he is looking strong. Senior Brady Fineran is injured but Baker expects him back soon. Baker says he does not emphasize the dual matches — he says its all about tournaments and the state tournament
AHSTW has a triangular tomorrow with Tri Center and Underwood and they will wrestle in the Riverside Tournament this Saturday.
