(Anita, IA) — CAM’s Ellen Gerlock is a big part of the SWAT wrestling team this season one of their senior leaders and she is off to great start so far. On Saturday, Gerlock finished 2nd at the Audubon tournament losing to Halley Beaudet of DCG by a narrow 6-5 score. That makes her 14-3 on the season with 10 falls. She has yet to medal at the state tournament so that is an obvious goal for her and she says she already knows she is better this year than last year
Gerlock ran cross country in the fall for the CAM Cougars which you wouldn’t think would help with wrestling but she says it has
Wrestling runs in the Gerlock family — her father Clarke Gerlock was the 189 pound state champion in 2003 and even though there was no official girls team when Ellen was a freshman in high school, he encouraged her to stay with the sport. She did not get to wrestle much that year and only finished 2-9 but she says there was a big reason for that
She stuck with it and improved to 30 wins her sophomore season and went the state, the first year it was sanctioned by the Girls Union. Last year it was 25-11 and another trip to state but still has not earned a medal. In order for that to happen, she says she has to stay in shape
Next up for SWAT, they compete at Atlantic on Tuesday in a triangular with Southwest Valley.
