(Elk Horn, IA) — Woodbine has themselves a couple of basketball teams — the Tigers earned the sweep on Tuesday night against Exira EHK, the girls won 55-39 while the boys look like they are ready to go back to state winning 68-28.
It was the opening game for the Exira EHK girls while Woodbine had one game under their belt. The Spartan played tough 2-3 zone throughout the game forcing the Tigers into some tough shots. But Woodbine’s defense force the Spartans into taking long threes and Woodbine’s size helped them dominate the boards. Woodbine led 14-10 at the end of the first quarter, they led 26-17 at the half, 41-28 at the end of the third quarter.
Charlie Pryor led the Tigers with 16 points but was held to 5 in the first half. She got to the free throw line in the 2nd half and hit a couple of threes. Kay Pryor put in 12 points, 9 in the second half. Taylor Hoefer added 7 and Danyelle Steinkuehler chipped in 8 off the bench. Unofficially, Woodbine was just 19-64 from the field for 29.6% and 7-21 from three point land.
Taryn Petersen was forced into long range threes and could not connect on one until the 4th quarter — she led the Spartans with 13 points. Riley Miller hit two threes in the first quarter and finished iwth 8. Harlee Fahn had 7 and Kadence Sporrer added 6. Unofficially, Exira EHK was 12-47 from the field for 25.5% and only 5-32 on their three point shots.
On the boys side, Exira EHK never led in the game and the Spartans leader Josh Nelson was completely shut down by a tough, smothering Woodbine defense. Nelson rarely even got a chance to shoot the ball — every time he got a touch, he was double teamed instantly and a few times was triple teamed. Nelson who averaged over 11 a game a year ago did not score a basket all night and was held to 1 point.
The Tigers scored the first 9 points of the game and led 15-8 at the end of one, 39-12 at the half and 54-14 through three quarters. The Spartans were held to just two baskets in the 2nd and 3rd quarter combined. The Tigers had 4 players in double figures — Carson Kelley had 5 threes for 15 points, Landon Blum also had 15, Carter Gruver had 13 and Brody Pryor finished with 10. Woodbine played without one of last year’s starters Jax Pryor who is still recovering from a football injury.
Owen Juhl led Exira EHK with 10 while Cannon Hansen hit three three pointers in the 4th quarter for 9 points total.
It was the opener for both Spartan teams so they fall to 0-1. Woodbine girls are now 2-0 and the boys are 1-0
