(Atlantic, IA) — There is a lot hope and promise for the Atlantic girls basketball team this season. The Trojans are coming off a 9-14 season but Head Coach Dan Vargason lost just one senior starter and has 23 total players at the high school levels this year. Atlantic’s leading scorer Peytn Harder is back to lead the team this year — the Senior averaged a double double last year (16.2 ppg and 11.3 rbg) — Vargason says everybody is aware of what she can do and you still cannot stop her
Junior Zoey Kirchhoff was an all-conference point guard for Atlantic who averaged 6.7 ppg and 2.7 assists a game and Junior Mackenna Schroeder will look to improve her three point percentage and found her shot in the second half of the season — the two players will solidify the guard spots. Vargason will turn to two juniors as well in the post
Vargason likes his depth — Sophomore Payton McLaren will back up Kirchhoff at the point guard spot, Sophomore Jillian Saathoff has improved her shooting on the wing and Sophomore Brynn Lamp and Junior Addie Freund will fight for playing time.
Vargason would like to see some improvements for this year’s Atlantic team — the turnovers have to come down. Atlantic averaged 23 turnovers a game last season. Vargason would also like to see his team play more physical this year
After hosting a big scrimmage on Saturday, the Trojans will have one more pre-season game tomorrow
Atlantic will open their season this Friday, November 22 hosting Pella.
