(Lincoln) The Nebraska women’s basketball team had a slow start but dominated in the final three quarters, securing an 84-58 victory against Southern on Tuesday evening.
Ranked No. 21, Nebraska improved to 3-0, while the Jaguars fell to 0-4. The game began poorly for the Huskers, who managed to shoot just 31% in the first quarter and struggled to find their rhythm. Southern kept it competitive by making three of their first six 3-point attempts. By the end of the first quarter, Nebraska held a narrow lead of 15-13. However, the Huskers extended their lead to 10 points by halftime, finishing the second quarter with an 8-0 run and shooting an impressive 70%.
Southern opened the third quarter with a 3-pointer, but Nebraska responded with a 12-3 run and never allowed the score to get within single digits again. The Huskers built a lead as large as 28 points, ultimately winning by 26.
Overall, Nebraska shot 49.1% for the game, including 5-of-14 from beyond the arc. The Jaguars finished with a shooting percentage of 37.3%, converting 8-of-21 3-point attempts.
Key differences in the game were noted in rebounding and free throws. Nebraska dominated the boards, out-rebounding Southern 46-26 and capturing 18 offensive rebounds. At the free-throw line, the Huskers converted 25 of 36 attempts, while the Jaguars had only 10 attempts, making six. Alexis Markowski and Natalie Potts were standout performers for Nebraska. Markowski scored a game-high 22 points along with six rebounds, while Potts recorded a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds.
