Don Schlotzhauer, 82 of Atlantic, Iowa, passed away Monday, October 28, 2024, at Cass County Memorial Hospital in Atlantic.
Donald John was born on the family farm near Massena, Iowa, on September 24, 1942, (his brother Bill’s birthday). He was the son of Arthur John and Pearl Agnes (Tracy) Schlotzhauer. His ornery spirit started at a young age and he seemed to hone his antics more with each passing year. He graduated from C & M High School in 1962.
On November 17, 1962, he was united in marriage to Sandra Sue Dory in Walnut, Iowa. Don worked for 33 years at AMU in Atlantic, where he started in the control room and later was a meter reader. He also helped at local auctions which is likely when his personal collection of “stuff” grew the most; he found many treasures to bring home, which included countless clocks and pocket watches.
At the age of 10 he took apart a watch and that was the beginning of his eventual renown as “The Clock Guy.” His steady hand and patience to work with the tiny parts in a timepiece were unusually fine and his level of expertise has become a lost art. Even though he retired from this work a few years ago he was still getting calls. Don enjoyed anything he could tinker with and fix, from cars to TV’s.
Don looked forward to spending time with his family and taking them for rides in his 1970 Chevelle. He also highly anticipated his yearly trip to Canada, fishing with friends; one year he found his fishing pole he’d lost the year before.
Don is survived by his wife, Sandra of Atlantic; son, Kevin (Rhonda) Schlotzhauer of Atlantic; daughter, Diana Sievers of Walnut; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; brother, Lowell (Bonnie) Schlotzhauer of Minnesota; sister-in-law, Carol Schlotzhauer of Kansas City; and extended family.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Pearl Schlotzhauer; his son, David Schlotzhauer in September of 2002; and brothers, Bill and Roger Schlotzhauer.
A Celebration of Life Visitation will be held from 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m., Saturday, November 2nd at Roland Funeral Home in Atlantic. A light meal will be served during this time.
Roland Funeral Service is caring for Don’s family and his arrangements.
