(Atlantic) A Quilt of ValorĀ® is awarded to a Service Member or Veteran who has been touched by war.
Janet Snyder, a former Elk Horn resident who currently resides in Atlantic, was presented with a Quilt of Valor Tuesday evening.
Janet served in the United States Navy from 1974 to 1984, which was during the Vietnam Era. Janet said she joined the Navy four days after she graduated from High School in Council Bluffs.
Janet Snyder reached the rank of E-4, which is a 3rd Class Petty Officer. Her first year was spent stationed in DC at the Bureau of Naval Personnel. She went to Hospital Corpsman School at the Great Lakes Naval Station in Chicago and served at Bethesda Maryland Naval hospital, Philadelphia Naval Hospital, Portsmouth Naval Hospital in Virginia and Roosevelt Roads Puerto Rico Naval Hospital with almost nine years of active duty. She was honorably discharged in 1984 following an accident onboard a naval craft. She received the Good Conduct Medal and the Armed Forces Medal during her service years.
The Quilt of Valor program is a grassroots group of quilters from across the Unites States. Judi Olson and Pat Engemann, representatives of the Southwest Iowa Quilts of Valor Worker Bees, presented the Quilt of Valor to Janet Snyder.
Quilts of Valor must be awarded, not just handed out.
You can nominate a Service Member or Living VeteranĀ on the Quilt of Valor website.
