(Atlantic) Iowa U.S. Third District Congressman Zach Nunn visited the Republican Headquarters in downtown Atlantic on Saturday afternoon to commend Fire Chief Tom Cappel and the Atlantic Volunteer Fire Department for their service to the community. Congressman Nunn expressed his enthusiasm for the many volunteers serving in the communities he visits.
Congressman Nunn stated that the Atlantic Fire Department has responded to numerous emergency calls this year, with at least 12 of them requiring the “Jaws of Life.” He emphasized that these incidents are not minor and are crucial for saving lives in the community. One of the main reasons for Congressman Nunn was to award present Chief Tom Cappel with the Iowa Medal of Merit. The Iowa Medal of Honor is awarded to citizens of Iowa who have shown courage, dedication, and service. Chief Cappel says none of this would happen without the members of the departments.
Additionally, Congressman Nunn presented each member of the volunteer department with “Challenge Coins.” The Congressman also complimented the City for leading the charge in recognizing how critical essential services are to communities.
Atlantic Mayor Grace Garrett discussed the importance of voting “yes” for EMS. Mayor Garrett emphasized that ambulance service is not currently considered essential and is not mandated to respond to 911 calls. Cass Health, the County, and the city have covered the bill for ambulance services over the past four years. She urged the passage of a measure on the November ballot to make ambulance service an essential service.
