(Des Moines Co) A Mediapolis woman died in a two-vehicle accident in Des Moines County Tuesday afternoon.
The Iowa State Patrol says 87-year-old Marilyn Jean Drebenstedt was driving a 2012 Kia Sorento westbound on US 34 near Middletown. A witness observed the Kia stop and begin backing up on the travel portion of the Highway. The Kia backed up until reaching a crossover marked with a No U Turn sign near mile marker 255. A 2019 Peterbilt, driven by 55-year-old Richard Scott Hoops Jr., of New London, was westbound on Highway 34 at the same location. The Kia turned left in front of the semi in an attempt to make it to the crossover.
The semi struck the Kia in the driver’s door.
