(Des Moines) The Farm Bill expired on September 30. For the second year in a row, Congress failed to agree on a new version.
The Farm Bill’s largest chunk, about 75 percent, supports low-income families through different programs to combat food insecurity, such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, commonly known as food stamps.
The majority of the bill’s Agricultural projects will be stalled, awaiting new legislation. Lawmakers are on recess until November 12, and they hope to negotiate when they return.
Nutrition assistance and crop insurance will continue.
