(Area) Harvest is underway and with no rain forecast in the near future, field fires are a concern.
All it takes to start a fire is just a spark from an engine or an overheated bearing on a combine.
Aaron Saeugling, Field Agronomist with ISU Extension and Outreach, said farmers should have a plan in place in case a fire occurs.
Research suggests that if there are dry conditions and winds speeds close to 30 mph and above, fires may be inevitable. During these periods, producers should consider delaying harvest until winds decrease or wait for precipitation.
