(Des Moines, IA) — Fall just got started, but the Iowa Department of Transportation has already begun prepping for winter weather.
“October 15th is considered our first day of winter,” said Craig Bargfrede. “We have to have a certain percentage of our equipment and trucks ready to go so the staff in the garages are pulling equipment out, doing maintenance on equipment and making sure everything is functioning properly and ready to go.”
Bargfrede says the DOT is sitting in a good position with their supply of salt to use on Iowa’s roadways.
“We have approximately 265-thousand ton of salt spread across the state at our 100-plus garages and outside locations. That amount is about 109-percent of our capacity. Going into winter we are sitting at a really good position,” stated Bargfrede.
