Winterset Hands Atlantic First Loss of the Season

By Tom Robinson Sep 21, 2024 | 12:18 AM

(Winterset) Winterset celebrated their homecoming with a 21-7 win over Atlantic on Friday night.

Winterset piled up 317 total yards of offense. Huskies quarterback Hunter Lyon completed 7-10 passes for 111 yards and two touchdowns. Hunter fired his first touchdown pass to Jayden Cooper with 1:19 left in the first half. Cooper snagged the pass at the Atlantic ten and hustled into the end zone on the 15-yard play, capping a ten-play 78-yard drive and giving the Huskies a 7-0 lead at the break. The senior signal-caller’s second TD pass went to Connor Vaughn for 22 yards with 3:31 left in the third quarter, and the Huskies led 14-0 after three quarters.

The Trojans ended the night with 197 yards of total offense. Tristan Hayes completed three of seven passes for 20 yards, along with 177 yards on the ground. The Trojans’ first and only score came on a counter play to Brock Goodrich, covering 57 yards, which put the Trojans back in the game, trailing 14-7 with 2:09 left in the third stanza. Tyson O’Brien led the rushing attack on 20 carries for 78 yards, and Gavin McLaren carried the ball eight times for 52 yards.

Winterset sealed the deal early in the fourth quarter when Hank Wilmes took the hand-off and skirted into the end zone from nine yards out. Following Assen’s extra point, the Huskies led 21-7, and the eventual final score. Wilmes led Winterset’s ground attack with 25 carries for 115 yards.

Afterward, Atlantic Head Coach Joe Brummer.
