(Winterset) Winterset celebrated their homecoming with a 21-7 win over Atlantic on Friday night.
Winterset piled up 317 total yards of offense. Huskies quarterback Hunter Lyon completed 7-10 passes for 111 yards and two touchdowns. Hunter fired his first touchdown pass to Jayden Cooper with 1:19 left in the first half. Cooper snagged the pass at the Atlantic ten and hustled into the end zone on the 15-yard play, capping a ten-play 78-yard drive and giving the Huskies a 7-0 lead at the break. The senior signal-caller’s second TD pass went to Connor Vaughn for 22 yards with 3:31 left in the third quarter, and the Huskies led 14-0 after three quarters.
The Trojans ended the night with 197 yards of total offense. Tristan Hayes completed three of seven passes for 20 yards, along with 177 yards on the ground. The Trojans’ first and only score came on a counter play to Brock Goodrich, covering 57 yards, which put the Trojans back in the game, trailing 14-7 with 2:09 left in the third stanza. Tyson O’Brien led the rushing attack on 20 carries for 78 yards, and Gavin McLaren carried the ball eight times for 52 yards.
Winterset sealed the deal early in the fourth quarter when Hank Wilmes took the hand-off and skirted into the end zone from nine yards out. Following Assen’s extra point, the Huskies led 21-7, and the eventual final score. Wilmes led Winterset’s ground attack with 25 carries for 115 yards.

Audio PlayerJake Wailes and Evan Sorensen led the Trojans defensively with 14 and nine tackles, respectively. Joaquin Wailes has seven tackles. Kinnick Juhl and Carter Hadley were credited with five each.
Cael Hirsh, Jace Bellamy, and Kahne Kiburz each registered four tackles.
Winterset ran 53 plays with 19 first downs. Atlantic had 45 plays and ten first downs.
Atlantic heads into district play next week against Knoxville with a 4-1 record. Winterset, 3-1, opens district play on the road at Norwalk.
