(Ames, IA) — The bye week is now over and its back to work this Saturday for Iowa St. as they host Arkansas St., coverage on KSOM.
With a win over the Red Wolves, Head Coach Matt Campbell can tie Dan McCarney with the most wins in Cyclone football history. McCarney won 56 games and lost 85 from 1995 to 2006 at Iowa St. while Campbell is 55-48 since 2016.
One of the goals over the bye week was to get healthier, especially at linebacker but Caleb Bacon is still out indefinitely and Harlan Grad Will McLaughlin has not healed up enough from his injury to come back this week. Instead, the injured guys have had to mentor the ones that will play
Freshman Cael Brezina has filled in for Bacon in the middle and has emerged as one of the top freshmen defenders in the Big 12 and Campbell believes his wrestling background has helped in his development
Campbell has seen development in his offensive line — from getting pushes in the red zone against Iowa and North Dakota to only allowing one sack this year, Campbell expects it to keep improving
On Saturday, Iowa St. plays Arkansas St. for the first time ever in its final non-conference game. The Red Wolves out of the Sun Belt Conference have wins over Central Arkansas and Tulsa and played Michigan tough last week in the Big House before falling 28-18. Sophomore QB Jaylen Raynor has thrown for 712 yards, 3 TD, and 3 INT. Junior Corey Rucker has 17 catches for 265 yards and 2 TD. They like to use a version of no huddle, quick snap offense and Campbell says his defense must in one word communicate to deal with it
#20 Iowa St. 3-0 hosts 2-1 Arkansas St., kickoff at 1:00, Cyclone Pre Game at 11 am on KSOM 96.5 FM
