(Lincoln, NE) — It will be a true freshman at QB for Nebraska in just over a week.
On Wednesday, the Nebraska Cornhuskers announced via X, formerly Twitter, that Dylan Raiola as the team’s starter in their opening game on August 31 against UTEP. Raiola wins the starting job over fellow freshman Danny Kaelin and Junior Heinrich Haarberg.
Haarberg had the most experience coming into this season with eight starts and 10 overall games played last year but Raiola was one of the top recruited quarterbacks in country. Originally, Raiola from Buford, GA was going to stay in state with the University of Georgia but switched to Nebraska. His Uncle Donovan Raiola is the Offensive Line Coach for the Huskers and his father is former Center Dominic Raiola who went to Nebraska and then played 14 seasons in the NFL, all with Detroit.
Dylan Raiola had said that “Nebraska was in my blood” when he decided to become a Husker and he takes over an offense that finished last in the Big Ten in passing yards a year ago and played three different quarterbacks.
On Saturday, Head Coach Matt Rhule had said he wasn’t planning on naming a starter this week, saying the offense was in good hands no matter who the starter was. Rhule had also said that the offense had confidence in every one of the players battling for the starting spot.
