(Area) The turtle harvest season opened in mid-July.
John Lorenzen, Fisheries Biologist with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, says Iowa has many species of turtles, but only four can be harvested.
Lorenzen said all of those species are found in southwest Iowa with snappers and painted turtles found in ponds and lakes, and softshell turtles in rivers.
The season is closed from May 15 through July 15.
