(Des Moines, IA) — The Iowa Supreme Court has denied a rehearing request by Planned Parenthood of the Heartland on Iowa’s law banning most abortions as early as six weeks of pregnancy. The law, signed by Governor Kim Reynolds in 2023, could ban abortions after embryonic cardiac activity is detected. Planned Parenthood estimates that up to 98 percent of abortions currently performed in Iowa would be banned under the law. The injunction blocking enforcement of the law is expected to be lifted soon, but there may be a delay before the measure goes into effect. Abortion remains legal in Iowa up to 20 weeks of pregnancy until the injunction is lifted.
