(Atlantic) This morning, thousands of cyclists are leaving Red Oak for a 40.1-mile trip to their final destination in Atlantic. Day 2 of the RAGBRAI will pass through Elliott, Griswold, and Lewis before the overnight stop. Atlantic Executive Chamber Director Bailey Smith advises those venturing out today to visit atlanticragbrai.com. There is no parking on 10th Street, and Chestnut Street from 8th to Chestnut is closed. All side streets between Walnut and Poplar Street are closed, and several blocks on 7th Street from Walnut to Poplar Street are closed.
Live entertainment will be available all day, from noon until 6:00 p.m., on Chestnut Street, across from the Wells Fargo Bank, and on 4th Street, in front of the ShiftATL building. The main stage is at 7th and Chestnut Street, in front of the First Whitney Branch Bank. Two Story Road opens at 6:30 p.m., followed by the band Pork Tornadoes from 9:00 to 11:00.
Additionally, there will be two beer gardens, one at Sixth and Chestnut and the other at 4th and Chestnut. The beer garden at 4th and Chestnut will be relocated to City Park at 6:00 p.m. Santa’s Cabin will be open from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. for all the children in town, with Santa himself in attendance. This is the eighth time Atlantic has hosted an overnight stay.
Smith anticipates around 17,000 registered riders, five to ten thousand non-registered riders, and others coming into the city to enjoy the day. The cyclists will depart Atlantic on Tuesday morning. The participants are set to ride 82 miles to Winterset, passing through Wiota, Cumberland, Massena, Fontanelle, Greenfield, Orient, and Macksburg.
