(Des Moines) The National Weather Service warns residents of Pottawattamie, Mills, Montgomery, Fremont, and Page Counties of dangerously hot conditions with heat index values up to 112 degrees. The Weather Service issued an Excessive Heat Warning for the five counties until 8:00 p.m. this evening.
A Heat Advisory is in effect for the counties along and south of Interstate 80 from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. today. The heat index is forecast to reach 100-110 degrees.
Meanwhile, the National Weather Service is forecasting a chance of strong to severe storms later this afternoon and evening, with the possibility of damaging winds greater than 70 miles per hour. The greatest threat is for central and east central Iowa.
