(Lincoln, NE) – After the departure of former Husker coach Evan Cooper, Nebraska has officially announced that John Butler will be joining the Husker coaching staff as the new secondary coach and pass game coordinator.
Butler has been appointed to Nebraska’s coaching staff after six seasons with the Buffalo Bills. He brings 29 years of coaching experience, including 19 in college football and 10 in the NFL. Head Coach Matt Rhule praised Butler as a top-tier defensive backs coach with a winning background and history in elite defenses.
Butler’s tenure with the Bills was marked by the team’s consistent playoff appearances over the past five seasons and four consecutive AFC East titles. He began as the defensive backs coach from 2018-21 and later added the role of passing game coordinator. Under his leadership, players like Tre’Davious White and Jordan Poyer earned All-Pro honors, while Micah Hyde and Taron Johnson were second-team selections. The Bills’ defense was consistently top-ranked in various categories, contributing to their success.
Before Buffalo, Butler coached the Houston Texans’ secondary from 2014 to 2017, helping them win two AFC South titles and leading a top defense. He previously worked at Penn State, serving as secondary coach and later defensive coordinator, achieving significant defensive rankings. Butler’s collegiate coaching career includes roles at South Carolina, Minnesota, Harvard, Texas State, Midwestern State, and Catholic University, his alma mater.
Butler expressed enthusiasm about joining Nebraska and contributing to the development of players both on and off the field. His extensive and diverse coaching background is expected to enhance Nebraska’s football program and defense.
