(Des Moines) The Iowa Insurance Division has issued four cease and desist orders against contractors who have acted as unlicensed public adjusters by soliciting business and offering services that require a public adjuster license. Those contractors include Darren Reeves Roofing – a limited liability company formed in 2022 with its home office located in Anita; Recon Roofing & Construction in Des Moines; Exterior + Home and Remodeling in Marshalltown; and American Dream Home Improvement in Downers Grove, Illinois.
The Iowa Insurance Division advises Iowans to ensure that storm restoration service providers are reputable by verifying proof of insurance, contractor registration, and references. Contractors not licensed as public adjusters are legally prohibited from negotiating with insurance companies, filing claims, or settling claims on behalf of consumers. Public adjusters, who act on behalf of insured individuals during claims processes, must be licensed in Iowa. After major storms, some contractors may unlawfully offer services that fall under public adjusting.
The public is encouraged to report such incidents to storm-chaser-scams@iid.iowa.gov. Iowans with storm damage should maintain regular communication with their insurance agents until claims are resolved and can file complaints with the Iowa Insurance Division if they have concerns about their insurance company’s handling of claims. This complaint service is free.
