(Atlantic) On June 11, 2024, the Atlantic FFA Chapter proudly represented their school at the Iowa FFA Floriculture Career Development Event hosted at Kirkwood Community College. Competing for the first time in this challenging contest, the team achieved a commendable 34th-place finish, earning a silver rating.
Participants Addalyn Sonntag, Lily Wilrich, and Maggie Cohrs showcased their agricultural expertise in various disciplines, including general knowledge, problem-solving, plant identification, floral design, pesticide application, floral production, and team activities. The event provided a platform for students to demonstrate their skills in floriculture, highlighting their dedication and preparation.
Eric Miller, Advisor for Atlantic FFA, expressed pride in the team’s performance, stating, “I was impressed with how hard the team has worked. This year, we focused on hands-on practical skills; next year, we’ll be even better prepared.”
The Atlantic FFA team thanks Ann Johnk from Farmhouse Flowers in Atlantic for her invaluable training support. Bob Smith and Hannah Dunlap, along with Kirkwood Community College faculty and staff, coordinated the event, which included lunch for all participants courtesy of the college. Notable judges for the floral design segment included Karen Garrett, Debbie McCallister, Stacie Hoag from Flowers on the Avenue, and Jill Kinsinger, a Kirkwood Floral Careers program alumna.
